Helpful Hints for Conducting a Breast Self-Exam

Almost 15 percent of women are at risk of developing some form of breast cancer over the course of their lives. Early detection is the best and only way to catch cancer early so that you can still live a relatively normal life. Therefore, you should conduct a monthly breast exam as part of your well woman health care plan in addition to your mammograms and yearly gynecological exam.

Here are the basic steps to perform in a breast self-exam:

 1.  Examine yourself in front of a mirror without your shirt or bra on. Check for any possible changes in the appearance of your skin, shape or texture. This could be in the form of dimpling or puckering.

 2.  Your nipples should be inspected to ensure that there are no changes in the texture or shape of the skin. You will want to squeeze each one to ensure there is no abnormal discharge.

 3.  Repeat the first two steps in three additional positions – with your arms at your side, raised over your head and also on your hips.

 4.  Taking your time, raise one arm and systematically examine the opposite breast (left arm, right breast, etc.) using the pads of your first two fingers. With slight pressure, massage in small circles every inch of your breast feeling for anything abnormal like a bump, lump, thick or fibrous area or even dimpling.

 5.  Massage under your arm and around the outside of your breast with your fingertips to check for abnormalities.

 6. Repeat the systematic examination with the opposite arm and breast.

 7.  Finally, lay down, placing a pillow under one shoulder, raising that same arm over your head. With the opposite hand, repeat the massage technique to check for lumps and bumps. This gives you a different angle and slightly different search field.

 8. Repeat the lie down examination for the opposite side.

When it comes to the breast self-exam, you may use a light lotion to allow your fingers to glide more smoothly around the breast. In addition, choose a particular day of the month in which you do it so that it becomes a long standing habit. Just a note of caution – do not conduct the exam during your period. Instead, wait a few days until after your period when your hormones have had a chance to level out.

Early detection is the key to the successful treatment of breast cancer. For more information check out the whole package at

Exercise Tips for the Traveller

The Youthful Traveler

One of the best options for great exercise for young people is to go to a club or some other place where you can dance all night long.  Although the air is not exactly healthy air to be breathing, what with all the smoking going on in some of these places, dancing all night long can be really healthy if paired with only moderate alcohol consumption.  On the upside, many such clubs and bars are going smoke free in recent years, so in a short amount of time, it should be possible to dance the night away in a smoke-free venue.  If you are traveling in Europe, don’t count on this happening anytime soon.Dancing is not just for the youthful people, waltzing all night is also very good exercise.

Adventure Travelers

For those who like to hit the slopes or hit the cliffs, there are so many options for adventure travelers that there are really limitless possibilities.  Among the most popular are skiing, biking and climbing.  If you are planning a trip, don’t forget to schedule all kinds of this kind of activities not only because it’s a healthier kind of trip, but also because it is frequently the best way to see all of the beautiful places to which you are traveling.  Touring Europe is never better than done on bicycle and on foot.  Skip the tour bus and rent a bike instead.  Not only will you see more, you’ll also get closer to the locals on a bike than you will on a tour bus.  Even if you don’t consider yourself a true adventure traveler, set yourself the goal of walking everywhere instead of taking the subway.  Walking everywhere is not only good exercise but if helps you meet more locals and see a lot more than you would see sitting on a bus, not to mention burn off all of the calories of yummy local food you consume.

The Business Traveler

The key to getting exercise on a business trip is in scheduling the time to spend your lunch break walking to a place to get a meal or leaving time to stroll around the airport (and not having so much carry-on luggage that you can’t comfortably stroll around the airport). Instead of sitting in your hotel room all night, take a walk and see the sights of wherever you are.  You’ll feel less like a business traveler and sleep better because you’ve gotten a little exercise. Set your alarm earlier than needed to allow time for an early morning walk, this will help you stay focused during the day.

The Family Traveling Together

Nothing is more fun for kids than wandering around a new place, not to mention that the more energy the kids use up in physical activity, the less energy they will have to fight you at bedtime and argue with each other.  Try to avoid dangerous activities, try to keep it to adventurous fun like moderate hiking trails instead of climbing rock cliffs.  Keeping it adventurous, but always safe, like biking on tarred trails instead of down gravel mountain trails will make it so that everyone’s having fun, but Mom and Dad aren’t scared that someone’s going to break a leg. If you are near the beach, an early morning walk on the sand is a great way to start the day. A walk before bed is a good way to end the day and should help the kids go to sleep.

Regardless of the type of traveler you are, keeping it fun and seeing the local sights is what keeps a traveler motivated to exercise.

The Magic and Many Uses Of Honey

Tips  from the Book “The Magic and many uses of Honey”

Tip 1 – Burns

Honey has some amazing powers when it comes to burn treatment. Although serious burns require immediate professional medical assistance, less serious burns are treatable with honey. Not only does honey do a good job of decreasing the pain associated with burns, it also assists in encouraging healing.

 Tip 2- Abrasions

Honey is a great treatment for abrasions, as well as burns. Honey is a great bet for dealing with your scratches and scrapes for a few distinct reasons. First, it reduced swelling by drawing excess moisture from the tissues when applied to the skin. Although honey is a liquid, it is a "thick and thirsty” liquid that actually soaks up moisture on contact.

Tip 3 -Cough and Sore Throats

Honey has long been a popular home remedy for those suffering from sore throats and coughs. That popularity is not merely a matter of tradition either. Honey really does help these conditions a great deal. You have undoubtedly encountered “honey and eucalyptus” cough drops in the store. They are a great way of handling cold symptoms.

Perimenopause – Do You Have It?

thumb secretstobeahealthywoman Perimenopause – Do You Have It?Menopause is official when you have gone over a year without having any type of menstruation. However, there is a period of time leading up to it – as long as 10 to 15 years – where your menstrual cycle becomes unpredictable and you could suffer from odd symptoms. This period of time is known as perimenopause.

The average age of women who experience menopause is the early 50’s so that means perimenopause could occur during most of your 40’s although some women do experience it even sooner. There are some signs of perimenopause that you could identify but keep in mind that it is still open to interpretation and could be attributable to other things!

  1. Changes in your menstrual cycle – This is the most common denominator in perimenopause but it could also be misinterpreted. Fibroids, cysts, cancer, and a host of other factors can also cause changes, so get a gynecological exam to make sure you are otherwise healthy.
  2. Body temperature fluctuations – Night sweats are common as well as hot flashes that typically last just a few seconds. As you creep closer to full-blown menopause, these episodes will last longer. Some women actually get cold sweats and are more prone to outer temperature changes during menopause.
  3. Mood swings – Being overly sensitive, anxious, irritable or even depressed are signs of perimenopause that many women report feeling.
  4. Vaginal Issues – Perimenopausal women will notice that their natural vaginal lubrication is greatly decreased due to the lower estrogen production. Lubrication products may have to be purchased if dryness is a major problem.
  5. Sleep issues – Perimenopause causes hormone fluctuations, which can contribute to problems of trying to fall asleep or even staying asleep. The night sweats are part of the sleep problem as well.
  6. Memory and concentration – Where once you could remember the most minute detail, now you have to write everything down. Feeling scattered is another issue of perimenopause. Concentration can be difficult. These issues are caused by the hormonal changes in the body. You can combat them by boosting your vitamin B intake.

Basically, perimenopause has symptoms that are quite similar to menopause, only to a lesser degree. The true sign of the switch from perimenopause to the real deal is the lack of a period for over a year, barring any other health issues.

While not every woman experiences symptoms during perimenopause, for other women symptoms can wreak havoc for ten years or even longer! For more information about this very real phenomenon, check out the whole package at

Tips to Save Money on the Shopping

Shop at your local farmer's market

Shopping at a farmer's market is usually a great way to save money on fresh local produce, especially if you are lucky enough to live in an area with an abundance of farms, orchards and agriculture. Your local farmers market is not only a great place to buy fresh fruit and produce but it also helps the local farmer. As an added bonus you will be helping to save the environment because the food has less distance to travel, a win win for everyone. This can be a wonderful opportunity to get to know your local growers.

To save money, buy in bulk

Buying in bulk can be a great way to stay financially fit and save money. If you have the space and money to buy in bulk, this can be a great way to save money on your grocery bill and save time as well. Be sure you are buying things you truly need and will use. It can be tempting to buy a four-pack of kitchen napkins if you see them on sale, but if you know that you probably don't need that many napkins and don't have the storage space, it's probably better to opt for your usual buy. Of course, there are certain products that all of us can stock up on safely. Toilet paper, laundry detergent, soap and other essentials are safe bets when it comes to buying in bulk. Make sure that you don't buy anything that will go bad within two weeks. Get a group of friends together and split the cost on large quantities, buying by the box and splitting it can save all of you money and time.

Consider a co-op membership or your wholesale big box store

If you have a local co-op store or wholesale store in your area, you may want to consider buying a membership. A co-op membership means that you have access to a wide variety of natural products and local organic produce. When you pay your member fees, you are effectively buying into the co-op and becoming partial owner. Before you rush off and join check the prices to make sure you will be saving more than your membership fees.

The Benefits of Honey

Discover the secrets to better health in just a few weeks!

Learn about The Magic of honey and its many uses.

Yes Honey, most of us have some in our cupboard, did you know that honey can help with burns, abrasions, hay fever, coughs and sore throats, digestion, arthritis, bladder infection, cholesterol, overall immune health, dental hygiene, halitosis, weight loss, acne as well as a beauty treatment.

Honey has been around far longer than the little squeezable plastic containers we may have in our cupboards! It is impossible to say how long people have been gathering and consuming honey because even our earliest historical records indicate that we have enjoyed the work of bees.

Cave paintings believed to have been created in or around 7000 BC show that people were keeping bees even then. Fossil evidence shows that bees were working their magic over 150 million years ago, which means that even the earliest people may have made use of honey.

Below are just a couple of the many recipes in the book

‘Magic & Many Uses of Honey’

Tasty Honey Cake
4 eggs
¾ cup sugar
½ cup vegetable oil
1 cup melted honey
2 ½ cups flour
1 cup orange juice
½ teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cinnamon
½ teaspoon ginger
1 tablespoon baking powder
Cream the eggs and sugar. Then, add the oil, honey and orange juice.
Sift the following 5 ingredients: flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger and baking powder: add them to the bowl with all of the liquid ingredients and mix well.
Then pour the batter into a slightly greased baking pan and bake at 350F for 60 minutes.

I made this for some visitors the other day and I was delighted that they all said they really enjoyed it. The best part for me was that it was really easy too make.

Honey Carrots
1 bunch carrots
½ teaspoon salt
¼ cup melted butter or margarine
¼ cup honey
1 ½ teaspoons grated lemon peel

Cook carrots in about one inch of boiling water until they are somewhat tender (15 minutes). Drain carrots. Blend the butter, honey and lemon peel. Pour the liquid over the carrots and place on low heat until the carrots are completely glazed.

This is a favourite of my children.
